Nielsen recently released their Q3 2011 Social Media report and it contains some interesting findings about the global and Australian marketplaces.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • According to Nielsen’s research on social networking around the world, Australian Internet users come out on top and spend the most time visiting social networks and blogs, averaging 7 hours & 17 minutes per person.
  • Social media has grown rapidly – today nearly 4 in 5 active Internet users visit social networks and blogs.
  • Mobile social media use is also on the rise globally and nearly 2 in 5 social media users access these services from their mobile phones.
  • Consumers frequently trust the recommendations of their peers, making social media an ideal platform for influencers to spread their ideas and purchase power. Research by NM Incite shows that 60 percent of social media users create reviews of products and services.

What's interesting to note is how the rising dominance of social media acts as a pressure point for organisations to become more sophisticated in their approach to customer engagement and advocacy.

This research yet again demonstrates that Australians are early adopters of social technologies and the region is an important marketplace for testing new services.

What the report doesn't point out is that behind every truly successful social media project is a sound community management, content strategy, moderation, project governance and reporting framework that links voice of the customer back to business objectives.
